Supercharging history in drag racing and how they can be properly applied to vehicles.

For some time now, supercharging has been very prominent among drag racers who are aware that sufficient airflow to the cylinders cannot be delivered by mother nature. Within the NHRA, superchargers are available in several categories which are frequently utilized by most OE automobile producers to enhance the efficiency of street and track racing.

The output is being increased by supercharging through the introduction of pressurized air into the intake of the internal combustion engine. However, the introduction of the supercharger will double or triple the torque and horsepower.

Contrary to turbos which are driven by hot exhaust gasses, the blowers are directly driven into the crankshaft. This implies that the engine rpm is directly proportional to the speed of the supercharger. Dave Turner from Procharger stated that basically, engines are air pump and more the air it is offered, the more power it will deliver and utilizing a supercharger to pressurize air into an air pump can triple the power it generates.

Further clarification from Glen Hutchison of the Blower Shop state that a ratio of fuel and air is required by any internal combustion engine to produce power. A naturally porous engine allows air to enter at atmospheric pressure of 14.7psi. which absorbs an equivalent amount of air. More air cannot be added to the engine in this situation because it depends on atmospheric pressure so additional fuel cannot be added to boost the output of power.

Basically, superchargers are air pumps and with the ability to pump in additional air more than the predetermined atmospheric pressure level requires additional fuel. If an ignition can be developed or appropriate burning the ratio of fuel and air can be achieved, the output of any engine can be increased dramatically. The amount of air pumped into an engine by a supercharger is defined by its driven speed in relation to the crankshaft. This can be controlled easily by modifying the drive pulley of the blower to either increase or lower its speed.

“The simplest form is an air pump for a supercharger, so you can add a similar amount of fuel by being able to add air to the engine above normal atmospheric pressure. Until you can spark this fuel / air charge [and burn efficiently], you can increase the performance of a certain engine significantly. The amount of air that is pumped in a motor by a supercharger determines how much it pushes compared to the crankshaft. Lance Keck, Vortech Superchargers Engineered Director said, “We believe that centrifugal overcharging is efficient in dragging and building horsepower due to its longitudinal boost and torque curve. This is easily controlled by modifying the drive pulleys to either speed up or slow down.” It is clearly a superior alternative over all others, combined with its significantly higher performance. For a broader level, the term “performance” is commonly used by people of all kinds and is more often than not simply misused or misleadingly misused. The real definition of efficiency is “the ratio, typically expressed as percentage, of work or energy generated by machinery, motors, etc., to energy supplied to it.” A current centrífugal supercharger has the maximum per pound output and the least parasitic loss of any form of supercharger. Therefore, the most powerful supercharging option available is by définition a centrifuge supercharge like a Vortech. “Supercharge carriers are common in drag racing for over 60 years, but they always evolve like any other part. The blowers of today have strong technology, and the road and track have endless options. It consists of stand-alone head units and full sets.

“Several improvements have been made during the last ten years in the design and building of a supercharger,” said Hutchinson. Rotors used to be made from 60-degree twisting steel per inch of rotor length known as the normal helical rotor and available in 120-degree twist aluminum billet, known as a rotor ‘ broad helix.’

“The billet again increases both the rotor’s power and its life span and significantly improves the range with which the blower can upgrade its high helix architecture. Therefore, the discharge or departure of the supercharger from its initial configuration has been redesigned. The long rectangular opening became normal and this was converted into a tarpaulin lined opening, known as an opening for the delta. Via experiments and testing, the delta opening proved that it worked much better by balancing the rotor’s helical twist, reducing friction or what aerodynamics experts refer to as’ dirty air.’ In race applications, the TBS blowers provide recessed bearing plates that drive the rotors back and improve the power of the piston. “Superchargers designed through CNC manufacturing and 3-D printing,” said Darren Mayer, president of DMPE. “Superchargers allow the air to travel more quickly, since it circulates throughout the blower. “Today 3-D inlet and download ports are open. The reproducibility and efficiency are reliable and correct. Once I started, inlets were like cast, I began to hold them by the hand and found great hp gains. Today’s openings take several engineering hours and have dyno checking to get the most rotor loading, so the supercharger is as efficient as possible. It has developed and uses machine aided design and high-quality CNC development to create a self-contained fuel system for centripheral superchargers. “With increased efficiency, tighter tolerances and aerodynamic changes, these really have brought superchargers into the 21st century,” said ProCharger’s Dave Turner. “With fuel injection and tuning tools being increasingly popular for racing devices, racers can really make the additional 3 to 5% out of their car and supercharger, which was not feasible 10 to 15 years ago.” Racers and street lovers can choose which power adder is better for their applications and most of the time nitrous, turbo charging, and/or sup are common options. “The boost provided by the overflow mechanism is instantaneous and can be managed with overdrive modifications,” said Littlefield Supercharger, Lee Littlefield.

Turner said: “To be consistent, efficient, easier to install, to tune and to manage the centrifugal ProCharger supercharger. A dynamic nitrous network can be volatile. Tanks are used for the production process, external oil lines and the bumping at stage to’ stand up.’ The racer will easily take the car, add the transbrake and adjust the engine to the correct rpm before starting. Before starting up, it has a ProCharger supercharger. The racers should concentrate on keeping a good light against the misuse of a turbocharged car during the stages.
